Christmas City Turku gathers together the most important elements of Finnish Christmas: the Old Great Square Christmas Market in Turku, the Christmas tree of Turku Cathedral, lots of Christmas events and, as a culmination, the Declaration of Christmas Peace to make the whole of Finland calm down. Christmas in Turku begins with a common great opening weekend on 1–2 December and continues till January 13, Saint Knut’s Day, giving Christmas mood and feelings to people of all ages.

The theme of Ecumenical Christmas this year is ”Living in harmony makes room”. The event will especially highlight the prevention of exclusion and inequality. The humanitarian message will be delivered by rap artist and author Karri Miettinen, alias Paleface, in the event which is organized already for the 25th time at the Turku Cathedral on 12 December, 2018.
The centenary of Estonia’s independence will be celebrated 24 February 2018. The City of Turku will be congratulating Estonia by illuminating the Library Bridge with the colours of the Estonian flag, starting from 6 pm. Estonian national flags will also be flying on the Läntinen Rantakatu street and at Turku Castle.
Children who will turn 7 that year or are older than that and who have not yet started school should be enrolled for compulsory education. Enrolment can be conducted on the Wilma system between the 2nd and 14th of January 2018.
The municipalities in the Turku region held a joint celebration for residents who received Finnish citizenship last year. The celebration was held at the Turku Volunteer Fire Brigade Building on 28 March.
